I remember the 1st time I saw Herbert Byrd (Slugger as we all knew him), playing drums in the band, boy seeing "Slugger" play was truly something special...we all knew he was doing what he loved. I remember too the last time I saw and spoke with him. I'll hold onto that memory as I extend prayers on behalf of his family. RIP "Slugger". Although our numbers grow smaller almost daily - Whitesville will never forget you.

My family and I would like to extend our very deepest condolences to the family of Herbert "Slugger" Byrd. May God grant you a "Peace that surpasses all understanding". "Slugger" was a very kind and loving person who never met a stranger. If you had the opportunity to grow up in the "Ville" you know that there is a special bond we all share that can never be broken. I had the pleasure of seeing him a few months ago and thank God for the opportunity to have shared that short moment in time with him. We reminisced about "Whitesville" and ended with a promise that we were going to "put something together" for the "Whites-villers" but instead, God saw fit to call you home from your labor. "Slugger", I sit here now and recall the days when we would be "dancing in the streets" while you practiced on the drums (for those that did not know, this guy was the best drummer ever). "Thanks" for your friendship and "thanks" for contributing to the childhood memories of the neighborhood that I love so much..."Whitesville"! Rest in Heaven my "Homie"...until we meet again somewhere around God's throne!
