Obituary

On Sunday, October 15, 2017 Mr. Vernon Lee Olds, Jr. (Plookie), departed this earthly life to glory. He was a native of Princess Anne County and was born on April 2, 1941 to the late Mr. Vernon Lee Olds, Sr. and Mother Catherine E. Olds. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Diane Olds, his brother, Minister Melvin Fenner and his sister Missionary Theola Olds.

Vernon attended Union Kempsville Public Schools and was self-employed. Most notably, he was passionate about music and loved to sing. Along with the late Leon Gatlin, George Wilson, Sr. and Rudoloph Johnson they started a gospel group, The Soft Tones. Later, he joined a rock and roll group called Emory and the Dynamics and recorded the hit single, Ice Cream Song. Vernon returned to his roots and joined the Gospel Glorifiers where they shared their love for Jesus. In his later years, Vernon was a member of New Hope Church of God in Christ under the Pastorage of Elder Steven Wilson, Sr. Even there; he continued to sing praises with his sons and the congregation.

Those left to cherish his memories and continue his legacy include his sons, Minister Vernon Franklin, Jr. (Rachel) of Chesapeake, VA, and Darrell Franklin of Norfolk, VA; his grandchildren, Brandon Gary, Dericka and Dakiya Franklin, Destanee Mitchell, Risi Baker (Shawn), Tracei Stephenson (Wesley), Tyre Bell, Ronald(RJ) Bell, Jr. his great-grandchildren, Da’Mir and Da’Siyah Franklin, Kevin Davis Jr.; Luke, Harper, Matthew, and Seth Baker, Wesley Stephenson Jr., his sister-in-law, Alice Fenner, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and many friends.
