Gladys was born in Bertie county, North Carolina to Fannie Thompson and Robert Bess. After graduating high school, Gladys subsequently married Rudolph Lane and moved to Virginia Beach. She spent the remainder of her life here. Her working years were in the hotel service industry where she remained until retirement.
Gladys was an avid gardener and expert cook. Cooking was such a passion for her that she would often cook for others even if the meal was not something she particularly enjoyed. Her life was fulfilled by ensuring that those around her were comfortable and cared for. This was especially true when it came to children. Many of us knew her as Aunt Gladys or Gramma. There was always room in her heart for everyone.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rudolph (Boots), her son Rudolph Jr. (Bay-Boy) and her life partner Raleigh (Pig). She leaves to carry on her memory a son Ralph Copeland, three generations of grand-children, nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers in law and a host of friends .
