Vernice Sanderson Obituary

Vernice Virginia Sanderson was born on January 30, 1933 and transitioned peacefully in her sleep on January 13, 2020. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas Gilchrist, Sr. and her mother, Marion Sheppard Gilchrist.  She was also predeceased by one daughter, Lorraine; one son, Louis; seven brothers, Robert, William, James, John Sr., Alphonso, Reuben and Thomas Lee Sr.; two sisters Ella Mae and Annie.

Vernice, affectionately known as “Nana” or “Weezy” attended public schools in the New Light section of Princess Anne County (Virginia Beach).  She retired as a devoted employee of Claudia and Jim Cummings, as well as Stephanie and Dave Tsoff after more than 60 years.  In her pastime, she enjoyed watching classic television shows, cooking and baking.  Vernice enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends, preparing holiday meals and making her long-awaited holiday treats.  Vernice was everyone’s “Nana” as her door was always open to welcome friends and neighbors who became extended-family.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory three daughters, Vernice Donaldson, Gale Grimstead and Sylvia Burford; two sons Freddie Gilchrist and Rodney Sanderson (Setandra);  six grandsons, DeShawn Sanderson (Sabine), Derrick Sanderson, DeAntonio Gilchrist (Charo), Alexis Nichols, and Gregory Walker; three granddaughters, Lekesia Donaldson, Nadia Donaldson and Shauquette Gunsel (Corey); seventeen great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter Gilchrist (Sarah); three sisters, Rosa Mae Jones (Lorenzo), Marion Vaughn (Ervin) and Naomi Gills; and a host of nieces, nephews along with other family members and friends.
