Albert Spence, Jr., lovingly known to many as "Ironman," peacefully departed this life on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. He was born on September 16, 1942, in Norfolk County, Virginia, to the late Albert Spence, Sr., and Geraldine Spence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Spence; son, Frederick Spence; siblings, Robert Spence, Jr., Jerry Mack Spence, and Vera Franklin; and his bonus brother, the late Alphonso “Buck” Spence.
Albert graduated from Crestwood High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, before embarking on a remarkable career with the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) Local 1248. For 36 years, he faithfully served as a dedicated longshoreman, ultimately retiring as a respected Gang Leader. His commitment, dependability, and strong work ethic earned him the admiration of colleagues and friends alike.
Albert was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, the late Bernice A. Spence. Together, they built a family rooted in love, perseverance, and faith. He was blessed with three sons: Albert Maurice Spence III, the late Frederick Spence, and Troy Spence. A devoted father and provider, Albert worked tirelessly to ensure his family was cared for and deeply loved. He also took great pride in maintaining the family farm, a labor of love that reflected his dedication to family heritage and hard work In his final days, Albert faced his challenges with his strength but still found a way to press on, supported by his son Troy, “the doctor” and his two assistants, Jan and Nurse Wanda Dew
Known for his warm spirit and easygoing nature, Albert often spent time at the bowling alley, where he could be found enjoying friendly competition on the lanes. He was also an avid football fan and a proud supporter of the Dallas Cowboys.
Faith played an important role throughout Albert's life. As a young boy, he attended Gabriel Chapel AME Zion Church in Chesapeake, Virginia, where he sang in the choir. In 2012, he renewed his faithful attendance at Gabriel Chapel and worshiped regularly at St. Grace Holiness Church of Deliverance, often attending services at both churches each Sunday. His love for God and commitment to fellowship remained steadfast throughout his life.
Albert leaves to cherish his memory two loving sons, Troy Spence and Albert Maurice Spence III; his beloved grandchildren, Ta'Nya Norman, Jayden Askew, Dashawn Braxton, and Da’Nell Dominique Spence; his bonus daughter, Jan “Tiny” Cuffee-Woody (Wayne); and his godson, Donald Cuffee (Deanna). He is also survived by five sisters-in-law: Leolious Melton, Joyce Cuffee, Barnetta Cuffee-Ferguson, Evangelist Vernetta Joan Cuffee-Lewis, and Deloris Spence; two brothers-in-law, Daniel Cuffee, Sr., and Rev. Dr. Clarence Cuffee, Sr.; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Albert's life was a testament to hard work, faith, devotion to family, and unwavering strength. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of love, resilience, and service will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
