Alice Marie Bailey Burton, widow of Will R. Burton, peacefully departed Friday, December 12, 2025, at her residence in Newport News VA. She was born on June 30, 1939, in Daugherty, Virginia, to the late Burley and Helen Wright Bailey.
Alice was educated in the Accomack County Public Schools. Alice worked at Holly Farms, Tyson Foods, and Perdue until retirement. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was an avid and faithful member of St. Luke AME Church. She served in many capacities, to include an usher and a missionary. Alice also enjoyed shopping, getting her hair, nails, and feet done, and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed cooking on Mother’s Day and Christmas. She was famous for her macaroni and cheese and stewed tomatoes.
In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Will R. Burton; sisters Emma Bailey Stone, Gladys Bailey Driskell, Grace B. Nedab-Abrom, and Helen Bailey Strand; brothers Herbert Bailey, Alfred Bailey, James Bailey, and George Lee Kellam. Fond memories will forever be in the hearts of her daughters, Janice Matthews (Eugene) of Pocomoke, MD, and Monica Brickhouse (James) of Newport News, VA; five grandchildren, Ivory (Leston) Wright, Ebony (John, Jr.) Williams, Jaterria Brickhouse, Eugene Matthews III, Ja’Mez Brickhouse. Seven great-grandchildren, Avery, Nahkiya, Jayla, Ava, Layla, Aja, and Sebastian; two sisters, Viola Custis of West Haven, CT, and Elaine Harris of Savageville, VA. Three sister-in-laws: Shirley Sheppard, Gracie ( Michael ) Knox, and Jean Mapp. One brother-in-law, Lewis Burton, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
