Artemus “Temus” Lee Owens was born, April 14, 1940, to the late John J. Owens and Sophia Hughes Owens of Princess Anne County. He departed this life on May 3, 2025 after a brief illness.
Artemus Owens grew up attending Seatack Elementary School and graduating from Princess Anne Training School (PATS). He worked various jobs and retired from the Virginia Beach City Public Schools after 17 years of service.
Artemus enjoyed baking. Two of his favorite desserts to make were apple cakes and his Christmas Pecan Pies. He loved golfing, gardening, and being outside. His other enjoyments included crabbing and fishing. He also enjoyed visiting New York to his friend, Michael, and his mother. He loved his sisters and brothers and was helpful in seeing to their needs. His life was based on his weekly routines. On Monday, he did laundry; Tuesday he visited the Dollar Tree; Wednesday he went to the grocery stores; Thursday was his day of rest; Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, he was out and about enjoying the sights of Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA. At home, you could find him reading the newspaper and listening to the radio.
Artemus Owens gave his life to Christ at an early age at the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. As an adult, he visited many churches in the Seatack area. He remained a God-fearing man all of his life.
He was predeceased in death by his parents and his siblings, Emily Outlaw, Marguerite Wright, John Jr., Dennis, Alphonso, and Willis Owens; Sisters-in-law, Ruth, Hazel, and Marian Owens; brothers-in-law, Harry Outlaw and Hallowed Wright Sr.; nephews, Anthony Humes and Melvin Outlaw; and niece Barbara Lewis.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a sister, Ann Owens, brothers David, Charles, Frank, and Kenneth Owens; sisters-in-law Sandra Owens and Christea Bates Owens; nieces Brenda Wright-Owens, Valerie Crawford, Maryann Owens, Jamie Outlaw, Terry Wright, Sarah Owens, Tasha Bates, Tiffani, Kay, Fay, Tonya, Emiley Owens, Rhonda Hopson; nephews Hallowed Wright, Wilbert Outlaw, Willis Alexander Owens, Johnathan Owens, Geremy Bates, Richard Owens, Michael Lewis, and Robert Hopson; and a host of great nieces, great nephews, family, and friends who will dearly miss him.
