Bernard “Tom” Jack Tompsett, 96, of Norfolk, VA, passed peacefully on Oct.12, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family and faithful dog, Colt. He was born in Rockford, Michigan, on Aug. 16, 1929.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annie Midgett Tompsett; father, Harry Tompsett, mother, Alta Burch Tompsett; brother, Sidney Tompsett; son, Daniel Bernard Tompsett, daughter, Vonnda Lee Perkins, and son, Jack Dean Tompsett.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his daughter, Debra Tompsett Taylor, step-daughters, Karen (Susie) Cutchins and Stephanie Taylor; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nephews; Cousin Thomas Tompsett (wife Sharon) of Baltimore; his life-long friend Judd Judson(wife Louise) of Sun City West, AZ, and his friend Aiman Eleryan of Virginia Beach, VA.
Tom served with pride in the Navy and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He served in Japan, Korea, and Panama. He also retired as a Marine Machinist from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, VA.
Tom graduated from Rockford HS in 1948. In 1994 he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He loved baseball, golf, bowling, and boating. He went to deer camp annually for many years with lifelong friends and family. He had a natural talent for music. He loved big band music and played the saxophone, piano, and harmonica.
A graveside service with Military Honors was held, October, 20, 2025, 2:00 P.M., at Riverside Memorial Park in Norfolk. Due to their special relationship, his grandson, John, received the flag in honor of Tom’s military service.
