Bessie Laverne Nelson AKA “Bessie Ma” was born February 28th, 1943 in Columbia South Carolina. The beloved daughter of the late Izora Martin and David Johnson of Columbia South Carolina. On Monday, December 5, 2022, at 8:55 am, Bessie departed this earthly life at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth and entered into heavenly glory.
Bessie was educated in Richland County public schools. She entered a career with Blue Cross Blue Shield. Retiring after many years of dedicated service. Her passion and drive for service led her back into the workforce with Virginia s public schools.
In Harlem, New York Bessie met her soulmate, Joseph Nelson AKA “POP”. In 1988 they married. They enjoyed a beautiful blissful marriage showered in love. Joseph Nelson Preceded her in death on October 13, 1991.
Bessie was a foster mother for over 20 years. She enjoyed having a house filled with large family gatherings, making some of the best meals, and dancing! Bessie was always there for anyone who needed help. Bessie was a beautiful soul and woman who instilled strength in everyone she knew. Her life has spanned over seven decades and now she leaves behind her legacy of strength and love, her light, and her beauty with us all.
Bessie was preceded in death by her daughter Faye Denise Eskew on September 6, 2004.
Bessie leaves to mourn her six children Vernelle (William) Mosley of Texas, Pamela (Christopher) Sheffield of Virginia, Robin (Coy) Fleming of Virginia, Elliot Farley of Virginia, Herman Nelson of Virginia, and Taurus (Yolanda) Nelson of Maryland, 12 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren, three Great-Great Grandchildren, three sisters, Doris Farley of SC, Patricia Farley of SC, Carol Martin Of New York, one brother, John (Bettie Mae) Farley of SC, as well a host of Nieces and Nephews.
