Betty L. Martin

Betty DeJarnette Martin, 81, of Norfolk, Va., joined Louis Mitchell Martin, her husband of 63 years, in the Kingdom of Heaven on Feb. 23, 2021. Betty was born on Sept. 16, 1939, in Halifax Co., Va., to Drewie and Maggie DeJarnette, who preceded her in death. She moved to Norfolk in 1957 upon her marriage to Mitchell, who passed in December 2020. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend and loved serving meals at Point of View of Elementary School for 25 years. One of her greatest joys was the fellowship of her Chr1st Fellowship Church and Gateway Church families. Betty is survived by her daughter Cynthia Ansell of Norfolk and son Michael Martin (Debbie) of Virginia Beach, her grandchildren Melissa and Joshua Woodhouse, Jordan Martin (Juhanna) and Trenton Martin (Beth), and great-granddaughter Avery. She is also survived by her siblings Ronald DeJarnette (Jean) and Juanita Tyree of Lynchburg, and Drewie DeJarnette, Jr. (Debbie), of Goode, and sister-in-law Patricia DeJarnette of Lynchburg. She is predeceased by her brothers George and Ray DeJarnette and brother-in-law Moses Tyree. She will be remembered for her gentle kindness, gracious spirit and the joy and laughter she brought to everyone she touched.

The family will receive visitors at Keith Matthews Funeral Home at 5665 E. Virginia Beach Blvd. in Norfolk on March 1, 2021, at 12:00 p.m., followed by a service to honor her life at 1:00 p.m. The interment service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Garden, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd. immediately following. A celebration of her life will be held at the home of her nephew and niece, Dr. Matthew and Mrs. Deborah Summers, 7306 Woodway Lane in Norfolk at 4:00 p.m.
