Betty M Young 90 years old was born in Newport, RI to James and Mabel (Davis) Seaman. She was one of fifteen children. She passed away peacefully in Virginia Beach, VA on October 23, 2023. She preceded in death her late husband Melvin Young and 14 of her siblings. She leaves behind to cherish her memory – her baby sister Helen Evans of CA, daughters Toni (James) Watts of Franklin, VA and Tuesday Randolph of Virginia Beach, VA and son William (Elaine) Freeman of Warwick, RI. 5 Grandchildren Andre’ Watts of Baltimore, MD, William Watts of Virginia Beach, VA, Lisa Butler of Norfolk, VA, Brittany Freeman of Middletown, RI and William (JR) Freeman of Riverside, RI. She also leaves behind 10 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who all were able to see/speak with her before her passing so she knew everyone loved her.
She attended Newport Public Schools and worked on the Naval Base in Newport, RI (food service) and for Raytheon in Portsmouth, RI (assembly) until she finally retired working part time as a school crossing guard for Newport School Department.
Though she was 90 years old she got around better than most people. Her love of family was her number one priority. She enjoyed making puzzles and going to thrift stores for a bargain – usually looking for antiques. She will be remembered for her compassion for others. She would give her last dime to help someone out. Now the Bank of Betty is permanently closed. Her feisty being kept you either laughing or crying.
Though she passed away in Virginia where her daughters cared for her since April - Newport, RI was ALWAYS home to her. So with that said a CELEBRATION OF LIFE will be held in Rhode Island in 2024. Please do not send flowers. If you wish to donate to a charity in her name that would be fine but she would say to save your money. She loved to give to the needy and children especially. She will be missed and always remembered as she lives on in her children.
