Cecelia Johnson Obituary

Cecelia Johnson, an extraordinary and caring person, entered this world on May 14, 1947.  Fighting a good fight, she finished the race and entered heaven on the late evening of Monday, May 17, 2021, receiving her crown of righteousness

Cecelia, infectiously known as Ceddie, was one of eleven children born to the late Cecelia Spivey of Norfolk, Virginia, and one of two children born to the late James Curney of Norfolk, Virginia. Cecelia was raised in Norfolk by her paternal grandmother, the late Susie Curney, and aunts Edith Curney and Ruth Parker.

Cecelia was educated in the Norfolk City Public School System, attending Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1965. Upon graduation, she gained employment at Norfolk Community Hospital, where she served as an accountant. Her eye for detail and meticulousness was impeccable. She was a great asset to the hospital and performed in her position for 25 years until her retirement in 1998.

Ceddie’s passion for life kept her from sitting still, which ignited her vigorous momentum to jump back into the workforce for another four years as an accountant at Retail Alliance.

If you asked anyone, Ceddie’s memory would live on for those who affectionately knew her as someone who always left a lasting impression on people for being her authentic self. She said what she meant and meant what she said. She had a keen sense of humor and fondly cherished the moments she spent with her family.

Ceddie will look down from heaven and cherish the simple pleasures of life; watching WWE,  Rifleman, Gun Smoke, The Have & The Have Not’s,  playing Candy Crush on her tablet, deciphering crossword puzzles, line dancing, where she was famously known as the 2 step queen. And last but not least, enjoying friends over a Milwaukee’s Best, and don't forget the straw!

Ceddie loved her family; she took immense pleasure in being a soulmate of 35 yrs, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. In her own words, she would refer to those she loved as “My love.”  Her heart was radiant, and she thrived on helping others.

She was predeceased by her mother, Cecelia Spivey; father, James Curney; grandmothers, Susie Curney and Beaulah Johnson; grandfather, William Henry Johnson;  sisters, Barbara Jean Davidson and Bernice Smith; brothers, Kenny Armstrong, James Curney, James Johnson, and William Johnson; aunts, Edith Curney, Mary Rose Curney, Gladys Gray, Annie Hardy, Ruth Parker and Dorothy Reid; uncle, William Johnson.

Cecelia leaves to cherish her memories: the love of her life Darryl Carter of Norfolk, Virginia; sisters, Doris Paulette Barringer, Chesapeake, Virginia, who Ceddie lovingly called “P”, Carolyn Curney, Norfolk, Virginia,  Portia DeMary, Norfolk, Virginia, Gail Felder, Norfolk, Virginia, Carolyn Heggins, Norfolk, Virginia, Ernestine Hill, Norfolk, Virginia and Doris Pannell, Camden Delaware; brothers, Demetrius Curney, Brooklyn, New York, Eugene Curney, Hampton, Virginia, Hilton Curney, Norfolk, Virginia, Ernest Felder, Jr., San Antonio, Texas, Willie Felder, Baltimore, Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews and friends.

We, the family of Cecelia Johnson express our sincere gratitude for your cards, flowers, visits, calls, kind words, deeds and especially your “prayers.” We extend a special thank you to our Church family and everyone who has shown love to our family during this time of bereavement.  May God continue to bless each and everyone of you.
