Courtney “Capt’n” Marshall Smith, 73, of Norfolk, VA, passed away unexpectedly sometime before August 8,2023, in his home. He was born March 06, 1950, in Norfolk, VA to the late Maggie Smith and Levy Weston.
Courtney was employed with International Longshoreman Association, and he was known to most of his brotherly co-workers as “Smitty”. He enjoyed working and retired several years ago. He spent a lot of his time fishing and growing fresh vegetables when he felt up to it. He did not let anything slow him down.
Courtney loved his children and grandchildren. They were usually the highlight of his conversations. He loved to communicate! At any given time, you could find him at his favorite coffee shop holding a conversation with the employees. After getting his coffee and a large cup of ice water, he would sit in his vehicle and sip his beverages, waiting to have a conversation with anyone he knew or passed by.
Courtney served his community. If you had a need, the “Capt’n” was sure to get the answer. If you needed food, shelter, furniture, a job, etc., he went the extra mile to help. He was also an Ordained Preacher. His ministry went beyond the walls, out into the community, meeting the needs of others and sharing his love for Jesus.
Courtney is survived by daughter, Evangeline Charity (Bruce), son, Courtney J. Smith (Eleslie), grandchildren (Domonique White, Jacobi Smith, Chanel Smith, Nicole Roach, Shavon Taylor and Breon Gardner), brother, Daniel Smith, a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and beloved friends.
Courtney “Capt’n” Smith will be missed and truly never forgotten. A memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm, August 25, 2023, at Keith Matthews Funeral Home, 5665 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23502.
