Diane Haley Kitchin

Diane was born in Fredericksburg, VA. on July 25th, 1942 to Henry L. and Gladys R. Haley. After graduating from Spotsylvania high school where she played clarinet in the band and lettered in Field Hockey, Diane attended St. Luke's hospital school of nursing in Richmond, VA. where she graduated in September, 1962. She also took courses at Richmond Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University), University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. and Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach Va.
Diane moved to Virginia Beach after her marriage to William “Hugh” Kitchin in September 1965. They became the proud parents of a daughter Amy Beth Kitchin of Virginia Beach and a son Matthew Scott Kitchin of Hilo, Hawaii.
Because of her strong faith, Diane was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Virginia Beach during her early years. Diane taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir and served as chairperson of several committees.
Diane volunteered for the United Way, American Heart Association and Meals on Wheels. She was a former member of the Colonial Chapter of the King’s Daughters. Diane was also a lifetime member of the Christian Women’s Club and the Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital Auxiliary.
Diane’s love of travel took her to many exciting places including England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Russia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and China. In later years she enjoyed cruises and road trips with girlfriends to complete her “Bucket List”. She also belonged to several Canasta groups, was a member of the Royal Rubies Chapter of the Red Hat Society, Habitat for Humanity and was an avid reader.
Diane was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1978 and served 4 times as Worthy Matron of the Virginia Beach chapter, number 75. In 1984 she received a three year appointment as grand representative of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Diane was elected Worthy Grand Matron by the Grand Chapter of Virginia, serving 1999 – 2000. She presided over the “Ocean Treasures of the New Millennium” session held at the Virginia Beach Pavilion.
At Diane’s request no service will be held. There will be a private inurnment at the Eastern Shore Chapel cemetery on Wednesday October 2nd, 2024 at 11:00 AM.
