Doretha Copes Wharton, the beloved daughter of the late Louise White Copes and Willie Copes, Sr. was born December 8, 1941 in Withams, Virginia. Dora or “Aunt Dora” as she was affectionately called; was an avid animal lover and one you could always find her working in her yard with flowers. A true woman of style and grace.
Dora dedicated her life to Jehovah and symbolized that dedication by water baptism in 1975. She demonstrated her dedication by actively sharing her beliefs with anyone she knew and regularly attended Christian meetings at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
One of Dora’s favorite scriptures was Isaiah 41:10 & 13: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you, Do not be anxious, for I am your God. I will fortify you, yes I will help you, I will really hold on to you with my right hand of righteousness. “For I, Jehovah your God, am grasping your right hand, The one saying to you, “Do not be afraid I will help you.”
Dora was preceded in death by both parents, Willie and Louise Copes; three brothers, Paige, Melvin, and Willie Jr.; five sisters, Grace Copes Taylor, Marie Floyd, Virginia Savage, Jacqueline Bailey, and Colita Copes Haggins.
Left to cherish loving memories are her husband of 58 years, Cornell Wharton, Sr.; 2 step daughters Rhonda Strand (Nelson Jr.) and Avis Savage; 1 step son Cornell Wharton, Jr. (Shenay); 4 step grandchildren, Dentelle Trader (Ceylon); Sterling Savage-Austin , Kylen and Kayla Wharton. A lifelong friend whom she loved as a sister, Agnes Johnson; and a host of nieces and nephews of whom she help raised and loved as her own. and other family and friends.
