Dorothy Mae Powell, affectionately known as Mae or Aunt Mae, transitioned into Heavenly Rest on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. Dorothy was born on June 17,1931 in Chesapeake County, Virginia to the late Hester and William Bartee.
Dorothy married the late Cola Sessoms, and from this union brought forth eight beautiful children who were her everything. She then met Linwood Powell, who she married and loved for over 40 years. Linwood was a single father who would add his four children to his and Mae’s loving family.
Throughout the course of Dorothy’s life, she accomplished many things. Dorothy was a wonderful seamstress. She could sew and mend anything you put in front of her. She was able to create any piece of apparel you could imagine, and could produce custom creations of her own. Through Dorothy’s career work as a nurse’s aide, she showcased to the public the love and nurturing qualities she naturally bestowed on her family.
Dorothy was a member of St. Mark United Church of Christ, in Berkley, for too many years to count, where she sang in the #2 choir, fellowshipped, worshiped, and introduced her children and grandchildren to Christ. When she wasn’t working or spending time with her family, she loved to collect dolls and watch “The Stories.” Dorothy would cut a rug and get on the dance floor at any family function or event, remaining the life of the party well into her final days. The last of the Bartee brood.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings; her son, Dwight; her daughter, LaVerna; and her husband, Linwood. Left to forever treasure her memories are her children: Beverly, Sarah (Edward), Carolyn, Cola, Shelton (Cynthia), Larry (Julia), Donald (Selin), Catherine, Linwood Jr, and Darnita (Rodney); her daughter in love, Cheryl Burrus; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, best friend, Mary Givens; and many other friends and family members.
