Eugene Bly, Sr., a beacon of strength and resilience, passed away on October 14, 2023, leaving behind a profound legacy of love and determination. Born on March 25, 1940 in Sylvester, GA to Ozella Powell and Willy Bly, Eugene was a cherished son and brother to his late siblings, Precious Carson and Robert Bly, and his surviving brother, Bryant Bly. Eugene’s life was defined by his unwavering spirit and dedication to his family and community.
Growing up in Norfolk, VA, Eugene graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, where he forged lifelong friendships and built a foundation for his future endeavors It was there that he met his late former wife, Odessa Bly, whit whom he shared the joy of raising seven remarkable children. Eugene explored a career path in property management with Norfolk Redevelopment Housing Authority and Methunion Manor. He however found his life’s passion as an entrepreneur through his dedicated ownership of a successful shoe-shining business in bother Norfolk and Boston, a testament to his hard work and commitment.
In 1973, he relocated with his family to Boston, MA, where he quickly became known as the cherished “shoe-shine guy” to all who frequented his establishment. His warm smile, kind demeanor, and skilled craftsmanship endeared him to countless individuals within the community
Eugene’s enduring legacy lives on through his children; Eugene Bly, Jr. (Sara), Eugenia Ruffin, Pamela Grant (Philip), Bonita Bly, Anthony Bly, Sheila Meridy (LT), Timothy Bly, and Reginald Bly (Michelle). His memory is cherished by 28 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 13 great-great grandchildren, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
Eugene’s dedication, kindness, and hard work will forever be remembered by those who knew him. His legacy as the beloved “shoe shine guy” in Boston will continue to echo through the city streets, a testament to the impact he had on the lives of those around him. He will be deeply missed but always cherished in the memories of his family, friends, and the communities he touched.
