A Time to be Born A child of God, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, a cousin, a friend, a prayer warrior for the Lord and confidante. A phenomenal woman who lives on in the hearts of those she touched. Born in Wrens, Georgia on December 9, 1926, Hubert and Rosa Mae Brown welcomed Evelyn into the world. Evelyn would be one of eleven children, with three brothers, Judson, Freddie and Terry; and seven sisters, Herolin, Lillian, Rosalie, Bertha, Hubert Marie, Rosalyn and Linda.
A Time to Love and Work Evelyn received her formal education in the school system of Wrens, Georgia – ultimately attending Wrens High School. After graduating high school, Evelyn taught the younger children in Wrens, GA. She met the love of her life, Rev. Dr. Matthew H. Lewis, while he was stationed at Fort Gordon, GA. They were united in holy matrimony in 1945; and to this union, two children were born – Thomas and Frances. Evelyn’s love for her children can be encompassed in three words – infinite, immeasurable, and unconditional. After Matthew separated from the military, they moved to Suffolk, VA, where Evelyn became a school crossing guard. Some of the former children still remember her today. She was also a teacher’s aide in the Driver area of Suffolk. Evelyn was also a faithful member of the Imperial Crescent Women’s Club in Suffolk VA. Later, the family moved to Virginia Beach to support her husband who became Pastor of First Lynnhaven Baptist Church in 1977. While there, she was a teacher’s aide at White Oaks Elementary School. Skilled at arts, she was also an excellent seamstress and crafts person.
A Time for Church At an early age, Evelyn joined Wrens Chapel A.M.E. Church in Wrens, GA. After marrying her husband and moving later in life, she joined East End Baptist Church in Suffolk, VA where she sang in the choir and taught Vacation Bible School under the pastorate of Rev. C.J. Word. She joined First Lynnhaven Baptist Church in 1977 under the leadership of her husband and pastor, Rev. Dr. Matthew H. Lewis. Under his leadership, Evelyn organized the #2 Usher Board in 1979. She worked faithfully with this ministry and also established the Women’s Fellowship. Evelyn also was a member of the Utoka Hite Missionary Ministry and the Sharon Association. Evelyn continued in mission work through visiting the sick in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private homes. She also faithfully participated in the Combined Ministries Day. Evelyn’s ultimate goal was to train the younger women to be upcoming leaders within the body of Christ. Evelyn gave her hands to do work, her heart to show love, and her time and talents to provide service.
A Time to Rest On Wednesday evening, April 2, 2025, God gave our beloved Evelyn her wings. Her memory will forever live on in each one of us. Evelyn will ALWAYS be a source of inspiration and love to all those she touched.

Lewis, Sr. (Trenace) of Virginia Beach, VA and Frances Lewis of Virginia Beach, VA; six grandchildren Antwan Lewis, Thomas F.
