Evera Mae Sample Ayers, the daughter of the late Raymond Sample and Lucy Ann Wise Sample. was born on April 5, 1930 in Middletown, Virginia. She also was known as Ms. Tootie. Evera went to be with the lord on December 10, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Ayers, Sr; daughter, Delestine “teen” Ayers; six sisters, Gussie Mae James, Annie Lucille Sample, Nancy Ann Jones, Mary Elizabeth Sample Sessoms, Maggie Lewis, and Viola Sample; and two brothers, Courtland Sample and Harry Sample.
Evera professed her faith in the Lord at a young age at Bethal Baptist Church. She continued to worship the Lord at New Mount Zion Baptist Church. Evera was very involved with New Mount Zion, serving as a pastor’s aide and apart of the kitchen committee. Evera was an avid traveler and an accomplished shopper. She was also known for her cooking, especially her wonderful rolls. Evera was a generous soul, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Evera leaves to cherish her memories two children, Bonnie Ayers Beal of Norfolk, VA and Walter Ayers, Jr of VA; son-in-law, Prentiss Beal; one sister, Helen Singleton of Philadelphia, PA; seven grandchildren, Walter Ayers III, Leon Turlington, Dontrell Turlington, Kendrick Townsend, Yvette Townsend, LeKisha Turlington, and Brandon Ayers; ten great-grandchildren, Joshua Johnson, Gibert Johnson, Kyree Townsend, Micah Smack, Tinsley Townsend, Landon Turlington, Obie Turlington, Delilah Turlington, Kaide Brown, and Kaylee Ayers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Evera will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
