On Saturday, March 5, 2022, our beloved, Deacon Fred C. Harris (96), entered into his eternal rest.
Son of the late Walter D. Harris and Penelope Jordan Harris, Fred was born on September 6, 1925 in Edenton, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Roy Harris, Rushious W. Harris, Norman A. Harris, Willie L. Harris, Harvey Roberts, Ruby Welch, Mildred Garrett; grandson Raymond B. Brown and sons-in-law Raymond Brown and Curley Edwards.
Fred worked as a gas station attendant for many years at Commanders Exxon, Norfolk, then as a Parking Lot Attendant for Dominion Bookstore. He was a 47-year member and Senior Deacon at Tabernacle Voice of Deliverance Church, Norfolk, under the leadership of Bishop Rudolph Tucker. According to Bishop Tucker, “Deacon Fred was the best deacon I ever had. He never gave me a moment’s trouble!”
He leaves to cherish his memories, the love of his life, his devoted wife, Mary Harris; six daughters, Olivia H. Brown and Millie G. Harris of Norfolk, VA; Sherelle Coleman (Kevin) and Ruby Hailey of Laurel, MD, Torrecia Edwards of NC, and Sandra Dales of Pinehurst, NC; two sisters, Mable Marshall of Boston, MA and Ruth Haywood (Arnold) of Framingham, MA; brother-in-law, Rev. Percy L. Garrett of Framingham, MA; sister-in-law, Carthina Brown, Chesapeake, VA; 12 grandchildren, Eunice Brown-Flanigan (Ben) of GA, Mable H. Applewhite of VA, Rhonda B. Stewart of VA, Kaleem and Jabari Coleman of MD, Andre Williams Jr of GA, Latisha Williams of FL, Tiara Williams of Norfolk, Alisha Meaders of MO, Sherricka and Alexander Cuffee of NC, and Sage Dales of NC.; a godson, Kenneth R. Setzer of Charlotte, NC; 17 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
