Gregory Baker Obituary

Greg Baker transitioned from life to reward on Sunday morning, January 21, 2018 after a long illness, surrounded by family.

Gregory Russel Baker was born September 2, 1957 in Newark, New Jersey. He married his wife, his queen Barbara, in March of 1981. They had four sons and raised them here in Hampton Roads.   Gregory served 22 years in the United States Navy and spent time as a truck driver. He lived life to the fullest.

Greg loved spending time with family, watching and playing sports, dancing and listening to old school music.  He was a phenomenal dancer.  As his children got older he found himself in the role of mentor and father to their friends. He had a word of encouragement or correction for all who found themselves connected to him and he did it in love.

He was an entertainer at heart.  He brought life and light to anyone who walked the Virginia Beach Boardwalk and the hospital with his blinged out scooter, bringing a smile to all who encountered him. Gregory also had a deep and abiding love for the Word of God and often engaged in lively conversations about scripture.

Gregory and his family are members of the Village Church where he was ordained as a Deacon on November 27, 2012 and served with honor, providing encouragement and support to all. Deacon Baker enjoyed attending Bible Study and enjoyed engaging in the class conversation sharing his unique perspective and infectious sense of humor.  He always had a smile on his face.

A man with strong presence, he was very generous. He didn’t mind sharing his heart, his family, his home and his wisdom.

Greg is survived by his wife of 37 years, Barbara Baker, his four sons, Gregory Jr., Alfred, Steven (Shrita), and Kadeem; two granddaughters; his sisters Lisa Bonds Virginia Beach, and Tina Adams, New Jersey; brothers, Randy Baker, New Jersey, Darryl Adams, Macon, GA, sister- in-law Joyce (Marcello); brothers-in-law David, Melvin (Ruby), Jessie, Charlie, Terry and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
