On December 31, 2023, Deacon James Alphonso Barnes, affectionately called ‘Uncle Buddy’, entered into his rest. He was born on August 24, 1926 in Reading, PA to the late Elizabeth Roberts. James attended Norfolk Public Schools in Norfolk, Virginia. James met and married Vita Lee Tatem Barnes on February 16, 1980 in Norfolk. Virginia is where they made their forever home and developed strong community ties in the area.
James became a member of St. Mark R.Z.U.A Church in 1980 under the leadership of the late Rev. James Oliver Allen Sr and Rev. Dr. Alvin B. Thomas. He was a very active and dedicated member within the church. He had over thirty years of service on the Deacon Board, and he was a member of the male usher board and male choir. James was an active member of the church’s community outreach programs which included Citizens for S.A.V.E and Students for S.A.V.E, the food bank and the soup kitchen.
James served in the United States Navy during World War II. James later retired from Air A. Plane Corporation after many years of service working as a supervisor.
James enjoyed telling stories, spending time traveling and educating people on African American History.
James was preceded in death by wife, Vida Lee Barnes, son, James A. Barnes Jr., daughter, Mattie Mullen, and sister, Barbara Roberts.
James leaves a legacy of love to cherish his memory: Sons: Cosell Barnes, Nardell Barnes; Daughters: Eunice Barnes, Velda Harper, Tonia Leslie; Grand Children: Theresa DeLoatche (Joel), Jasper Mullen, Danita Barnes, Tamara Barnes-Daniel (Joel), Elizabeth Barnes, Cortez Williams, Jacque Leslie, Traque Leslie, Gabriel Leslie, Micaiah Leslie & Jeremy Leslie; and a host of Great-Grand Children, Great-Great Grand Children, Nieces, Nephews; and friends.
