Linda Ames Obituary

In Loving Memory

Linda Chandler Ames

July 10, 1949 – September 23, 2024

Linda Darnell Chandler Ames, the fourth child of the late Elizabeth C. Garrison and Pilton Chandler Sr., was born in Onancock, Virginia on July 10, 1949.

As a young adult, Linda recognized that Heaven was real, and that the only way to get there was through faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior while a faithful member attending Bethel A.M.E Church in Onancock, VA. As a member there, she served on the Usher Board, Community Choir, Financial Committee, Lay President, and Missionary Society (member and former president).

After graduating from Mary N. Smith High School in 1967, Linda married the love of her life George E. Ames on August 10, 1967. From this union, two children were born: Jonathan and Tangela.

Linda’s career began at R & G Shirt Factory in Parksley, VA and then Holly Farms (now known as Tyson’s) in Temperanceville, VA. Finally, Linda received a call from United Virginia (known as SunTrust) and was employed there for 29 years until her health began to fail, forcing her to retire in 2002. In her spare time, Linda loved to cook, shop, and read books, always waiting for the next bestseller to come out. She also loved watching “The Young & The Restless,” “The Bold & The Beautiful,” Judge Judy, Family Feud, and was an avid lover and fan of the Denver Broncos football team. Linda’s infectious smile and sweet personality always left a lasting impression on others. She never met a friend she didn’t like, and she will be forever missed.

In addition to her parents, Linda was preceded in death by her brother, Jesse Chandler, and uncle, Robert Chandler, Sr.

Left to cherish her fond memories are: her husband, George E. Ames of Savageville, VA; son, Jonathan (Laverne) Ames of Midlothian, VA; daughter, Tangela (Demetrious) Parker of Delmar, DE; five grandchildren: Jonathan (Catrice) Kees of Bowie, MD, Jonta and JaQuana Ward, both of Parksley, VA, Jamesha Ames of Gargatha, VA, and Danyelle Strand of Fayetteville, NC, 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Mayfield Miles of New Church, VA; brothers, Pilton Chandler, Jr. (Nellie) of Monticello, NY and Harry “Ricky” (Maeswell) Chandler of Norfolk, VA; step-sister, Vivian Brunson of Phoenix, AZ; sisters-in-law, Dorethea Chandler of Savageville, VA, Frances Chandler of Chesterfield, VA, and Carlyse (Eugene) Giddins of Lewes, DE; brother-in-law, Kenneth Miles of Salisbury, MD;  special cousins (like a brother and sister), Robert (Evelyn) Chandler of Sandy Spring, MD and Phyllis Shelton of Baltimore, MD; goddaughter, Tammi Duffy of Fayetteville, NC; longtime & special friend, Janice Giddens of Tasley, VA and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
