Luther Gregory Jr. was born on May 14, 1949, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to the late Luther Gregory Sr, and Alberta Hall. He peacefully transitioned on March 30, 2026.'
Luther was educated in the St. Francisville, Louisiana school system. At an early age, he developed a strong work ethic and volunteered for the Peace Corps, gaining hands-on experience in brick masonry, a skill that reflected his dedication and craftmanship throughout his life. He later traveled to many places while visiting family and attending The Church of God & True Holiness convocations. During a visit to Buffalo, New York, Luther met the love of his life, Edna Louise Carlton. The two fell in love and were united in holy matrimony on December 27, 1971, in Richmond, Virginia. In 1975, Luther and Edna relocated to Hampton, Virginia, to be closer to family. He worked at Brenneman Bakery before beginning a 34-yr career at Newport News Shipbuilding, where he faithfully served until retirement.
Luther had a deep passion for music, vehicle maintenance, cooking/baking and people. He was a member of New Beginnings Church of Christ, where he expressed his love for music as a bass player, a soloist and baking cakes for his family and friends. He was also involved with the Van Club, John Pellum and the Mellow Tones, Salt of the Earth, Willie Richards Quartet Group and The Gospel Majestics Quartet Group.
Luther and Edna shared 53 beautiful years of marriage, a testament to their enduring love and commitment. He was preceded in death by his father, Luther Gregory Sr., and his brother Willie Johnson. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Edna L. Gregory; two children, Jerry L. Gregory and Jerissa R. Gregory; a brother, Robert Johnson and a host of relatives and friends. Luther’s legacy of love, faith, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
