Mable Latimer Obituary

On Saturday, October 26, 2024, Mable Louise Harris Latimer received her heavenly wings and is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was truly a gift from God. Mable had many talents; she was a true friend, always ready with a kind word. If you visited her, you would leave with some type of trinket—perhaps a book on how to celebrate a long and loving marriage, a surprise gift for a new educator, or simply kind and loving words of encouragement and prayers. She was truly a giver.

Born on September 9, 1933, to the late Herman and Madie Harris, Mable was predeceased by her brothers, Herman Harris and June Harris, as well as her sister, Helen Baker. She was educated in Wilson, North Carolina, and attended Norfolk Public Schools.

Mable was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and Virginia State College, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. As an educator for 36 years in Norfolk Public Schools, Mable was an outstanding teacher who touched the lives of many children. She taught at Liberty Park Elementary and Crossroads Elementary until her retirement in 1992. Mable ensured her students excelled in all subjects and prioritized “respect for others.”

From an early age, she was baptized and had been a proud member of First Baptist Church Bute Street for 66 years. My mother had a beautiful spirit until her last breath. She was active in her church, faithful in her worship, and loved the members like her own family. Mable participated in several organizations, including the Hospitality Committee, Seniors in Action, Missionary Circle, and she served as a Deaconess.

God used Mable to touch so many lives. Her family finds comfort in knowing that her purpose has been fulfilled, and she is now resting peacefully in the Master’s arms.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 70 years, Calvin Lewis Latimer; their loving daughter, Calvette (Karl); grandchildren Roderick Latimer Young and Karla Danielle Young; future grandson-in-love Erasto Simmons; great-granddaughter Malayah Danielle Young; her sister Ann Wilson (David); as well as loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. Special thanks to Mrs. Barbara Hibbler, Mrs. Russelle Hill, Loretta Raiford, and Crystal Raiford.

With loving thanks to my adoptive children Dyteya Lewis, Terry Harris, Vanessa and Linwood Turner, Cecilia and Vincent Scott.
