Mary Ellen Savage Obituary

On Thursday, May 6, 2021, Elder Mary Ellen Snead Savage departed this life to be with the Lord at her residence in Melfa, Virginia where she resided with her loving daughter and caregiver, Jackie. Mary Ellen, the beloved daughter of the late George Henry and Mary Emma Snead, was born on February 17, 1941 in Onley, Virginia.

She was educated in Accomack County Public Schools and attended Mary N. Smith High School. She was employed as a home health aide taking care of the elderly for several years later becoming a homemaker. In June 1963, she was united in holy matrimony to Robert Lee “Sam” Savage. They had four children and Mary Ellen’s oldest son whom Robert raised as his own. They also raised her husband’s niece and nephew, Gwendolyn Rowley and Larry Rowley at the death of their parents. Elder Savage accepted Christ at an early age at Grace Mary Tabernacle in Melfa, Virginia. She continued her service to the Lord at Victory Pentecostal Church of Deliverance in Exmore, Virginia under the leadership of the late Pastor Julia Ames and she became an ordained minister. Before her health began to fail, she was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Holy Church in Bayside, Virginia under the leadership of Pastor Blanche Dix. She was currently a member of Living Word Church of Deliverance in Parksley, Virginia under the leadership of Apostle Irvin Jackson and Co-Pastor Evora Jackson. “Mama” as she was affectionately called by her family and many others was a kind and loving woman.

She dearly loved her family. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved spending time with them. She greeted everyone with a smile. Through many years of sickness, she never complained. Instead of complaining, she would say “nevertheless”. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Lee Savage, her parents, and 13 siblings. Elder Mary Ellen Snead Savage leaves to cherish her memory: 5 children: Herbert(Belinda) Snead of Hopewell, VA; Jacqueline Savage of Melfa, VA; Ivonne Savage of Reynoldsburg, OH; Louetta(Michael) Justice of Winterville, NC; Robert Lee(Tiffany) Savage of Chesterfield, VA; 1 sister: Lena Langston of Philadelphia, PA; 2 brothers: Fred(Effie) Snead of Onley, VA and George Snead of Lawnside, NJ; 1 brother-in-law: Paul Savage; 1 sister-in-law: Barbara Savage; 16 grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Derek, Brandon, Brittany, Cameron, Cedric, Eriq, Imani, Vachella, Candace(George), Christopher, Keshia, Patrice, Sherrell, Donald, Tiffany, and Jaylen; 26 great grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren: Jaden, Ta’niya, Zariyah, Te’yana, Brooklyn, Jahmir, Brielle, Kayden, Tristan, Claude, Candasia, Shamar, Makai, Lyriq, Aajah, Cy’jay, Sa’raye, Tre’quan, Malyk, Amari, Trinity, Zaya, Christian, Aleilah, Atyana, and Anijah; 4 special young ladies: Anha, Aysia, Donielle, and Fytemah; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
