Mildred Taylor Obituary

At Chesapeake Regional Hospital, on Thursday evening, January 7, 2021, God whispered ever so softly in Mildred’s ear and said, “My child, it’s time to come home.” We shall miss her, but we know she is in a better place.

Mildred Griffin Taylor was born on March 31, 1944 to the late Mildred A. Griffin and the Rev. Charlie Griffin of Bells Mills, Norfolk County, VA. At an early age, Mildred accepted Christ in her life and believed in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She later joined Little Zion Baptist Church where her father was an Associate Pastor in Chesapeake, VA. She graduated from Crestwood High School in 1962.  After graduation, she continued her education at Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA where she graduated with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education.

After graduation, she began working as an Elementary School teacher with Chesapeake City Public Schools. Later she would become a Reading Specialist at B.M. Williams Elementary School, Chesapeake, VA. Mildred was an outstanding Reading teacher and received many recognitions and awards for her work. During her teaching career, she met and married the love of her life, Robert Raymond Taylor. From this union, they have three children: Robert Taylor, Jr. (deceased), Ronald Taylor and Ryan Taylor. She retired with thirty years of service with Chesapeake City Public Schools. After retirement, she decided to do part-time work as a tutor and childcare worker with the Baum family of Norfolk, VA: Gary, Elena, Jaden, Asher and Micah. From that work experience grew a beautiful and lifelong relationship.

Mildred enjoyed life and family. She was an avid reader, and you could find her anytime enjoying a good book. She also enjoyed, arts and crafts, traveling, shopping, and bowling, where she belonged to several bowling teams. “Sister” as she was affectionately called, was a soft spoken but firm person. She was kind, loving and devoted to God and family and always willing to help another person. She was known for spending “quality” time with family.

Besides her parents and oldest child, Mildred was predeceased by her brothers and their wives, Owen and Sallye Griffin, Charlie Jr., and Belinda Griffin. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 52 years, Robert R. Taylor, Jr.; Sons: Ronald Taylor of Atlanta, GA, Ryan Taylor of Portsmouth, VA; Sisters: Joycelyn L. Downing (Rev. Edward) of Wichita Falls, TX, Denita M. Dozier of Chesapeake, VA; Brother: Winfred L. Griffin (Mary) of Chesapeake, VA; Five Grandchildren: Marty, Elijah, Little Ryan, Jock and Miracle.  Sister-N-Law: Dr. Julia Avery Muse (Ronald E.), a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
