Nellie Christine was the tenth and last child born to the late Wilmer L. and Lucy R. Whitney. She was born on March 28, 1942 in Norfolk County, Virginia. Being the baby of the family, Nellie received all the attention and love of all of her older siblings. They surrounded her with love.
She received her initial Christian education when she attended Mount Gilead Baptist Church. Later, she joined her family at Oakwood Chapel Church, where she remained. While at Oakwood, she was a member of the Floral Club, Birthday Club and the Deaconess Board.
Nellie was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools where she attended Old Oakwood Elementary School, Ruffner Junior High School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She was employed by Norfolk Public Schools, General Form Company, King Foods, Naval Air Station Norfolk and Private Duty Nursing.
Albert Revels (Fish Man) was Nellie’s first love until his death. Later, she married Deacon Thomas Lawson. She mothered Samuel A. Whitney, Cedric O. Whitney and LyVonnia C. Revels.
Nellie had several favorite sayings. Here are her two favorites: “Only the strong survive” and “I did it my way”. If you were ever in her presence at a social function, Nellie was the life of the party.
On February 12, 2024 Nellie transitioned to her eternal home. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, both sons, all of her siblings and other relatives.
Those left to cherish the fond memories are her daughter, LyVonnia C. Revels, her companion dog, Latte, sisters in law, Rebecca Butts, and Hortense Brown; special niece, Cheryl H. Brock; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
