Norman K. Baynard Sr. of Norfolk, Virginia (95) was born on September 18, 1928 in Wilmington, Delaware, and passed away on Jan. 30, 2024 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the son of Charles Baynard Sr. and Cornelia Gowens Baynard (both deceased). He was also predeceased by brothers; Aubrey Gowens, Norman Gowens, Charles Baynard Jr., Khalil Wadud and a sister, Mae Baynard.
Mr. Baynard was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk, Virginia where he served as a food pantry volunteer. He also served as a member of his neighborhood civic league for many years.
Chuck as he was known as had a vast military background that consisted of service within the Air Force, Army, and Navy during WWII, the Korean War and two tours in the Vietnam War. After completing 20 years, of naval service, he retired.
Mr. Baynard completed three years of college at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia, with a focus in business administration.
Mr. Baynard spent his retirement years taking care of himself, his wife and extended family, relaxing, listening to jazz, and playing his double bass.
He leaves behind many loving memories to Mattie McCluney Baynard his wife of 64 years, and their five children; Jewell Foster, Windell Baynard Sr. (Mary), Norman Baynard Jr., Alan Baynard and Keith Baynard (Deena), all of Norfolk, Virginia; 8 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Also to mourn him; a sister Cornelia Robertson, his brothers; Carl Baynard and Harding Baynard; in-laws Professor Edward McCluney Jr., Ethel Copeland, Scarlett Parson, Constance Berry, Paulette Williams (Raymond), Marjorie Allen (John), Rose Dykeman, John McCluney and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members, communicants, friends and neighbors.
