Ophelia Mae Marcus, 90, of Norfolk, Va was born in Lamar, South Carolina to the late Hammie T. Marcus Sr. and Rosa L. Marcus. After moving to Norfolk, she attended Norfolk Public Schools. Ophelia later on moved to Harlem, New York where she resided for several years. Ophelia returned back home to Norfolk, Virginia, where she was a server at Charlie Wong’s restaurant. After retiring, Ophelia would babysit children in the neighborhood and later became her sister Maggie’s caretaker until her death in 2015.
Ophelia truly enjoyed life. She loved good food, playing cards, dominos, and the lottery. She also loved traveling to Richmond to spend time with family. She even helped form the “Birthday Club” where she and a host of friends celebrated each other on special occasions. Anyone that knew Ophelia, knew her as someone who was an excellent cook, with a swift tongue and a witty personality.
She was preceded in death by her father Hammie T. Marcus, her mother Rosa L. Marcus; brothers Clarence Sansbury and Hammie T. Marcus Jr; sisters Rosa B. Marcus, Maggie M. Allen, and Louise Taylor.
Ophelia leaves to cherish her memory her brother Willie J. Marcus (Effie) of Norfolk, Virginia and a host of nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces; great-great nephews and nieces and great-great-great nephews and nieces, cousins, and longtime friend Edna Rogers.
Although she maybe gone, she will not be forgotten!
