Phyllis Ann Brooks Barnes was born on January 27, 1948 to the late William L. and Dorothy S. Brooks in Norfolk, VA. On July 22, 2024, she went home to be with the Lord.
At the age of six, Phyllis moved with her family to Tidewater Park, where she had many friends. She attended Norfolk Public Schools, after which she moved to Washington, DC where she married her first love, the late Milton Gray Barnes. To this union was born their daughter LaTesha.
Phyllis retired after working many years as a telephone operator for C&P Telephone Company, now Verizon. She loved her job and enjoyed serving and talking to people.
Phyllis enjoyed cooking and entertaining in her home. She really loved to bake cakes, sweet potato pies, and sew. She was very fond of her pets (Riley and Caro). She loved to laugh and enjoyed joking around.
Phyllis was preceded in death by one sister, Sharon Smith; three brothers, William Brooks, Albert Brooks, and Micheal Brooks.
Many loving and cherished memories will linger in the hearts of her loving daughter, Latesha Childress (Son-in-law Anthony Childress) of Camp Springs, MD; two grandchildren, Mekyah Childress and Anthony R. Childress of Camp Springs, MD, two sisters, Gloria Johnson (Raymond) of Norfolk, VA and Iris Roach; two brothers, Keith Brooks and Tony Brooks Sr. (Vivian) of Norfolk, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
