Robert Lee Phillips Sr. peacefully transitioned into his eternal rest on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Chesapeake Regional Hospital in Chesapeake, Virginia. He was the oldest son from the union of James A. Phillips and Helen L. Phillips born on June 13, 1945.
Robert matriculated through the Portsmouth City Public Schools System. He eagerly joined the United States Navy following his school career at the youthful age of fifteen years old. During his twenty years of service in the U.S. Navy, Robert served in various capacities including Hull Tech, Recruit Trainer, and Chief Petty Officer on nuclear submarines. Following his years of active duty, Robert continued to serve his community as a fire inspector for the Recruit Training Center in Orlando, FL. His final stint of public service was for the Virginia Department of Transportation where he served in the state traffic controller division.
Robert experienced an amazing transformation when he dedicated his life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in 1981. He released the shackles of sin and began a committed life of obedience to the Lord. He began a passionate pursuit to satisfy his voracious hunger to understand the word of God by engaging in diligent Bible study and completing ministerial training. His life embodied his favorite scripture. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15. Under his Tree of Life Radio Ministry, Robert through faith attempted to impact as many people as he could using his God given teaching gift.
Robert’s renewed mind ignited a desire to initiate and participate in countless lively conversations about the goodness of the Lord with relatives and strangers alike. In his desire to serve the Lord he has worn many hats. This afforded him the opportunity to support various ministries and ministry leaders. These moments delighted his heart and gave him great joy.
Although Robert loved most sports since his youth, he had a keen fondness for playing short stop with the community baseball team. Later in life, Robert became an avid Philadelphia Eagles football fan. His hats and attire calmly communicated his allegiance to the team.
Robert was strong in his convictions, stood steadfast in his beliefs in God, and was devoted to his family.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, one brother, Darnell Phillips and one sister, Diane Phillips. He is survived by his wife of 30 years Maggie A. Phillips, his two sons, Robert Creekmore-Phillips (Michelle) and Robert L. Phillips, Jr. (Tamika); his children through marriage, James Wimbush Jr. (Barbara), Adrienne Wimbush (J.J.), Dawn Wimbush, and Eric Booker (Velma).
