Ruby Williams Obituary

Ruby Lonett Williams departed this life peacefully on April 28, 2026, in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 87.

Ruby was born on January 10, 1939, in Windsor, North Carolina, to the late Joe Rome Speller and Sarah Speller. Affectionately called “Noint” by her brother TC, Ruby carried a vibrant personality and unmistakable spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her throughout the City of Norfolk.

She graduated from Bertie County High School and dedicated much of her life to serving others. Ruby worked as a Public Health Assistant for 27 years and remained deeply committed to both her church and community. A woman of strong convictions and unwavering determination, she was known throughout Norfolk for her political advocacy and willingness to speak up for what was right. Her efforts helped bring handicapped parking signs and additional street lighting to her neighborhood, leaving behind a tangible legacy of care and community improvement.

Ruby proudly participated in the Obama campaign and believed strongly in civic engagement and the importance of using one’s voice to create change.

A faithful woman, Ruby was active in Gethsemane Baptist Church. Her faith anchored her throughout life, and she often found comfort in the words of Psalm 23: “The Lord is my Shepherd.” She inspired those around her to stand up for themselves, remain strong during difficult times, and always do what was right.

Ruby was naturally gregarious and full of wit, humor, wisdom, and personality. She loved talking with family and friends, and one of the things her loved ones will miss most is hearing her voice on the other end of the phone saying, “why you don’t call nobody.” She was known for saying, “My elevator goes all the way to the top,” and “I can’t make this stuff up.”

She also had a creative spirit and enjoyed making floral arrangements, singing, listening to gospel music, Motown classics, and The Staple Singers. She especially loved sweet potatoes and McDonald’s “fresh” French fries.

Ruby was a resilient woman who held her family together during difficult seasons of life and brought the family forward. She stepped up, and carried her family through with full strength, determination, and grace.

She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Karlton L. Williams, in 2024.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Lonett R. Williams, affectionately known as “Cookie”; her grandsons she lovingly welcomed into the world, Raysean K. Richardson and Tarelle S. Shurelds; and her beloved great-grandson, Kaiyee Richardson.

Ruby’s life was marked by faith, resilience, laughter, advocacy, and love for her family and community. Though her presence will be deeply missed, the impact she made on the lives of others will not be forgotten.

“Well done, thy good and faithful servant.”
— Matthew 25:23
