Samuel Grimes, Jr. Obituary

Samuel Ira Grimes, Jr.

On April 10, 2021, Samuel “Sammy” Ira Grimes, Jr. departed this life at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Sammy was born on January 26, 1946 in Norfolk, VA, the 2nd of 9 children, to Samuel and Harriet Grimes. He attended Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk and was a United States military veteran. He served 4 years in the Navy, and over 4 years in the Air Force. He was very smart and received an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force.

His family called him Sammy. Some of his old friends and military buddies called him Sam. He enjoyed his life after returning home from the military.  He was very handsome and considered himself a ladies man. After the death of his very dear companion, Vivian Harrison, he lived with his sister and caregiver, Catherine Miller.

Sammy was always in good spirit. He loved to smile, laugh, and joke. He liked wearing his watch and other jewelry. He would sneak pieces of jewelry from Catherine to wear.

He had some good times with his brother Donell, who would take him out to visit several different places. Sammy had a unique and humble way about himself like no other. He could talk “old school talk” and Donell understood him.

He loved to eat good food and was always ready to enjoy his next meal. Chicken was his favorite, but he enjoyed all food.

Sammy was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Harriet Grimes; two brothers: Vernon L. Grimes and Clinton E. Grimes; two sisters: Orna Mae Hunter and Margaret L. Cleary.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters: Catherine Miller (Caregiver) and Angela Regina Davis (Kenneth); two brothers: Rudolph Grimes (Ronda) and Donell Grimes (Ruth); and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
