Sarah Francis Mitts

Sarah Francis Mitts was born on March 27, 1933 in Melfa, Virginia to the late James Bagwell and Sadie Turlington. She ascended to peace in the arms of God on Friday February 17, 2023.

Francis or Ma Mitts as she was affectionately called by family and friends lived in Virginia most of her life.  She was a very sweet and loving homemaker who loved to cook and enjoyed having company to share it with.

 She was a dedicated member of Church of Christ in Keller, VA, where she faithfully attended until she was no longer able due to her declining mobility. Even being confined to a wheelchair because of her debilitating arthritis, she remained a happy person, always having a smile on her face.

The baby of the bunch, she is preceded in death by all eight of her brothers and sisters; her son Ralph “Mickey” Mitts; her daughter Helen Turlington; and her granddaughter Brittany.

She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons: Larry Mitts of Macon, GA and Delmus “Smiley” Mitts of Melfa, VA who was her live-in caretaker during her final years; one daughter: Dorothy Lewis of Lithonia, GA; twelve grandchildren: Schaneen Lewis, Latina Lewis, Leon Turlington, LaKeisha Turlington, Dontrell Turlington, Ralissa Lewis, Vernsheina Townsend, Nicole Lewis, Raheem Colmon, Xavier Colmon, Antwan Lewis, Derrick Cotton; eleven  great-grandchildren; a special niece, Gail Turlington, who loved and cared for her, diligently handled her household and business affairs, her medical needs, and who Aunt Francis would call on any time day or night; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
