Celebrating the Life of Sylvia

Sylvia Elvetta Drummond was born in Baltimore, MD on November 9th, 1943 to the late Virginia Mertine “Ginny” Drummond and Frank Edward “Eddie” Drummond. She departed this life on Thursday, April 14th, 2022.

Sylvia was educated in the Baltimore County Public School system where she graduated from Edmundson High School in 1961. At an very early age she joined Macedonia Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD where she was baptized and a very active member until she later moved down to Virginia and joined Gospel Temple Baptist Church where she was a faithful member and trustee until her health began to decline.  After graduating high school, she attended nursing school and became an LPN. Upon receiving her nursing license, she joined the United States Army in 1969 and served 26 years, including Desert Shield and Desert Storm, until her honorable retirement in 1995 as the first African American female 1st Sergeant of the battalion.

Sylvia moved to Virginia in the 1980’s where she began working at Dr. John Snyder’s office as his nurse. She was also running a foster care home where she later adopted her daughter in 1998. In the 1990’s, she was a LPN at the former Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, VA. Once she left the hospital, she was the processing nurse at Tyson’s Foods in 1999 until she retired in 2006. After retirement anyone who knows Sylvia knows she could not sit still and worked several different jobs including an aide for ESCC, McDonald’s briefly, and lastly finished out at the VA ABC liquor store.

In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her brother Edward Cleveland “Bunky” Drummond and both maternal and paternal grandparents.

Sylvia leaves to cherish her amazing legacy and memories: one daughter, Rochelle Ann Drummond-Brown and son in law Paul Edward Brown Jr.; Children she took under her wing and loved dearly (Rajai Robinson, Shenia Davis, Angela and Gerald Schoolfield, Michael and Jennifer Whittington, Margie and Martin Vasquez, Stephanie and Ritchy Adams, Stephanie Boan, Nea Coston, AJ Pitts and Angel Thornes and many many more), best friends Phyllis Rheubottom, Brenda Yates, Arthur Pitts Sr. and Helen Brown Chandler, special cousins (Sylvia Gunter, Darryl and Keva Gunter, William and Tracy Gunter, Edward and Pauline Gunter, Lola and Ronald Dix, Connie Finney, and a host of many more), a very special and close friend Joseph Johnson and plenty of friends, bowlers and coworkers over the years who loved and admired her. Her sweet spirit, caring soul and giving nature will absolutely be missed. Keep her legacy continuing in all that we do!

                                                                                                                                                                Sorrowfully submitted,

                                                                                                                                                                                The Family
