Vernell “Ms. V” Rhines was born on December 20, 1950, to the late Pernell Spivey and Lola Octavius MCray in Norfolk, Virginia. She is survived by her husband, Clifton Rhines, her daughter, Evangeline L. Charity, son in-law, Bruce A. Charity, her son Courtney Smith Jr., daughter in-law Leslie Smith, sister Essie “Duck” Blount, her stepsons, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. She is preceded in eternal rest by her sister Barbara “Fuzzy” Doe and late brother in-law Henry Doe.
Vernell Rhines had a beautiful spirit and lived a life of service. She loved to cook and worked as a cook for a few decades. Even in her last days, she had the desire to go to work. Ms. V had a big heart, giving to others and helping those in need. She was the life of the party, often hosting various cookouts and gatherings at her home along with her husband. Her desire in life was to see everyone come together and get along. She truly enjoyed life and seeing everyone smile. Ms. V supported her family through all their dreams and endeavors. She was at every grade school graduation, college graduation, and police academy graduation. Vernell was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. Her favorite color was yellow, favorite flowers were Sunflowers and Poinsettias, and she loved to watch westerns.
Vernell Rhines passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 23, 2023, in the home of her daughter and son in-law. The viewing will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, from 3pm-6pm, at Keith Matthews Funeral Home in Norfolk, Virginia. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at 11 am, at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please send plants.
