Willie Junius Lyles, born on June 1,1947, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, December 24, 2025, leaving behind his love of life, good humor, and wisdom that will be remembered by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca Gay, his father, Junius Lyles and his brother, Joseph Gay.
Willie’s life was marked by dedication to hard work, loyalty to those around him, and an ever grateful spirit. He claimed to be a follower of Jesus Christ, and his faith impacted his life and relationships.
Answering the call to serve his country, Willie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam War. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and earned the U.S. Rifle M-14 Marksman Badge.
Following his military service, Willie worked in several trades. He was employed as a landscaper, construction helper, truck driver, and delivery driver. He took pride in honest work and was known for his reliability and strong work ethic. Willie especially loved to drive, finding peace and enjoyment in being on the road. Beyond his work and service, Willie was known for his warm presence, good humor, and willingness to help others. He valued honesty, loyalty, and had a street-wise wisdom about him.
Willie is survived by his son, Toney Lyles, his brother, Jerome Gay (Jutta), his sister, Wanda Gay (Alan Dickens) and his niece Rhonda Moore and a tremendous host of family and friends who loved and helped him until the end. The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to all who knew him and genuinely cared for him.
Willie took peace in the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30:
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Willie Junius Lyles will be deeply missed by his family and friends but fondly remembered. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and his love a lasting gift. A small service will be held at Albert G Horton Jr Memorial Cemetery on 1/29/26 at 10:00am.
